'Certified' Prophet Gets One Year in Jail
Afrail and elderly grandfather of 15 who claims to have visited heaven - twice - and received a revelation from God came back to Earth with a thump on Friday when he was jailed for one year for blasphemy.
An apparently contrite Bakri Abdullah, 70, who is also known as Amaq Bakri, Papuq Junaedi and Abdullah, told the Selong District Court on Lombok Island that he was "grateful" for the verdict, which was six months lighter than what prosecutors had asked for.
Bakri was arrested in October last year after he angered residents at his village in eastern Lombok by claiming to be a prophet.
He also claimed to have ascended to heaven twice, once in 1970 and again in 2005, from a forest on the slopes of Lombok's Mount Rinjani.
He boasted that on his second ascension he also visited the spirit world.
When Bakri told villagers he had made the two heavenly sojourns, and even received "certification,
When the frail man was nearly attacked by villagers, security guards intervened and then handed him over to police.
Lombok Police, not the least bit amused by his claim, promptly charged him with blasphemy.
The court heard that Bakri had led a sect that called itself Istijenar Raksa Gunung Rinjani and included 29 followers.
The members of the sect performed weekly rituals involving evening sermons. They also conducted pilgrimages to Mount Rinjani, the country's second highest peak, every Friday.
The presiding judge cited Bakri's advanced age as a mitigating factor for the relatively light sentence, as well as the fact that his followers had willingly returned to orthodox Islam.
Weighing against him, the judge said, was the fact that his actions could have led to conflict between Muslim villagers and could also have threatened relations between different religious communities.
Speaking after the verdict, Bakri denied ever claiming to be a prophet.
"People can call me whatever they want; what's important is that it wasn't me who said that," he argued.
He also said he did not attempt to convert others, pointing out his followers had come to him seeking enlightenment.
