Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al-Jufri said that Indonesia would be free from street children at the end of the term of the Second Indonesia United Cabinet in 2014.
The minister made the remarks before opening a Social Welfare Development Planning Meeting here on Tuesday.
He said that in order to free Indonesia from street kids which now totaled 230,000, the government would do its best to empower their parents in cooperation with owners of care houses (homes for street children) and provided motivation on the need of education.
"We have found several problems that created street children, among others, the role of parents who asked their children to earn money in the street. So, the empowerment of parents is one of the programs that would be carried out to solve street kid problem," the minister said.
He said that the government has provided free entry school fee facility but parents still faced the burden of other costs such as books and school uniforms.
"We also considered the importance for street children to join the houses of children but up to now the ministry of social affairs are still providing in stages facilities because the number of houses for homeless kids in Indonesia is still big," the minister said.
He said that street children problems did not take place in Jakarta only but also in many parts of Indonesia. Jakarta is expected to be free from street kids in 2011.
"East and West Nusa Tenggara provinces have significant numbers of street children, namely about 20 percent of the whole number of neglected children," he said.
The ministry of social affairs is now handling four percent of the number of neglected children, totaling 160 thousand. It plans to handle 50,000 street children every year until 2014.(*)
