Saudi Arabia Shuts down Fatwa Websites
September 20, 2010
Saudi Arabia's Communications and Information Technology Commission shut down several websites in early September for violating a royal decree that restricts the issuing of religious edicts (fatwas) to the official Council of Senior Scholars. The August 13 ruling by King Abdullah is seen as responding to the chaotic issuing of controversial edicts from scholars in the kingdom, and has been described as another step in Abdullah's reform initiatives. After some websites continued issuing fatwas, Saudi Mufti Abdul Aziz Al al-Sheikh announced (Arabic) that members of the council will be named shortly, adding that those who break the law will be prosecuted according to the law.
