Political negotiations are in full swing ahead next year's presidential election, with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party and the Golkar Party both hoping to form a coalition with Megawati Sukarnoputri's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.

Theo Sambuaga, Golkar Party deputy chairman, said on Monday that his party and Megawati's PDI-P could form a coalition after the legislative elections in 2014.

Meanwhile, House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie, speaking as vice chairman of the Democratic Party's Board of Patrons, also said the door was open to a coalition between the ruling Democrats and the PDI-P.

"In politics, everything is possible. Whether united or separated, what is clear is everything should be for the interest of the state and nation. The Democrats are always keeping the door open," he said.

Analysts have pegged the PDI-P as the sought-after political prize because most surveys predict it will come out as the winner of the 2014 legislative elections. It also has several strong candidates that could win the subsequent presidential election.

Dian Permata of Founding Fathers House, a Jakarta-based research center, said both Golkar and the Democratic Party realize that the PDI-P has a massive contingent of loyal supporters.

"Both parties know that supporters of PDI-P ideologically have strong roots compared to the newly founded Democratic Party and pragmatic Golkar," he said.

Dian said both Golkar and Democrats realize they do not have strong figures to win the presidential election. Both are approaching PDI-P because they lack candidates with the name recognition of some PDI-P figures, such as PDI-P chairwoman and former President Megawati Sukarnoputri and up-and-coming Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, he said.

Saleh Daulay of Jakarta State Islamic University said the PDI-P's position had been strengthened in recent years due to its consistency as an opposition party.

"The party has proven that it can do something even when it doesn't join the ruling coalition," he said.

For Yudhoyono and the Democrats, the best chance at staying in power may be to nominate a vice presidential candidate to team up with whomever the PDI-P selects as its presidential contender.

If Megawati decides to run again, the PDI-P and the Democratic Party might team up, but perhaps only if the chairwoman can put aside past tensions with Yudhoyono.

In this case, Dian said, Taufik Kiemas, Megawati's husband, had a significant role to play in bridging the divide.

Taufik, who many said got a favor from Yudhoyono when he became chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), has repeatedly said the PDI-P and the Democratic Party should form a coalition.

Last week, Taufik and his daughter Puan Maharani visited Yudhoyono at the presidential office — a move that raised speculation of a renewed effort to team up the two parties.

Meanwhile, Golkar will have to remove Aburizal Bakrie as its presidential candidate if the party wants to form a coalition with the PDI-P in the presidential election.

Dian said it might be a good idea to replace Aburizal as Golkar's presidential candidate, as his electability had not increased since his declaration as the party's sole candidate last year.

Golkar has been divided on Aburizal's candidacy, with several senior members, especially former chairman Akbar Tandjung, questioning his electability.

The Democratic Party, Golkar and the PDI-P were the three biggest parties in the 2009 legislative elections, with 20.8 percent, 14.5 percent and 14 percent of votes, respectively.
