Jakarta Launches Second Phase of Counterflow Traffic Easing

Authorities on Monday began the second stage of the Jakarta's counterflow traffic scheme by opening one lane of traffic going to the opposite direction, this time from Jelambar to Grogol, in front of the Darmais Cancer Hospital.

The plan, aimed at alleviating the flow of traffic heading toward the city from the outskirts, is scheduled to be implemented daily during morning rush hours from 6:55 to 9:00.

Inaugurating the launch of the counterflow scheme were State Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan and Adityawarman, the president director of toll road operator Jasa Marga.

Adityawarman said that the scheme was intended to reduce congestion on the city toll road.

Hasanuddin, operational director of Jasa Marga, said that an average of 2,000 vehicles pass through the toll road from Jelambar to Grogol every hour.

"With this counterflow scheme, it is expected that 1,200 vehicles could use the counterflow lane and this is hoped to result in a significant reduction of congestion," Hasanuddin said.

Jasa Marga, with the cooperation of the Jakarta Police, has already enforced a counterflow area from Cawang to Grogol for the past 10 months.

"It has shown good results, that is it has been able to reduce congestion and push the number of accidents between Cawang and Grogol to nil," Hasanuddin said.

He said that another counterflow scheme will be implemented from Cawang to Rawamangun soon, and the toll road from Kapung to Pluit on both sides would be widened.

Jasa Marga, he added was currently studying a plan for an outer ring toll road.
