Ternate airport loses hundreds millions in assets due to vandalism
The Baabulah Airport in Ternate, North Maluku has suffered hundreds million of rupiah in loses after fuel-price hike protesters destroyed its property.
The protesters occupied the airport on Wednesday and vandalized guardrails and lights on the airport's runway.
"This airport is a public facility, they should not vandalize its property," airport master Abdullah Musa said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Abdullah said some planes that were about to land in the airport had to be diverted to the Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi.
Some passengers voiced their disappointment over the protesters' actions.
"My plane was about to land, but was diverted after seeing people burning tires and wood on the runway," a passenger identified as Popi said.(iwa/dic)
