Beijing. Indonesia and China strengthened their bilateral relations on Friday with the signing of six agreements and prospective deals worth potentially more than $17 billion.

The agreements followed talks on Friday between visiting Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Chinese President Hu Jintao, in which both sides reaffirmed the importance of relations.

"Both countries have the spirit to increase strategic cooperation in various sectors," said Yudhoyono, who received an honorary doctorate from Tsinghua University on Friday afternoon.

Hu and Yudhoyono witnessed the signing of agreements on maritime cooperation, fighting drug trafficking, trade statistics, Chinese visitors to Indonesia and a joint oceanography and weather-research institute.

China's Foreign Ministry quoted Hu as telling Yudhoyono that China supported the idea of Indonesia playing a greater international role and that it wanted to expand bilateral cooperation on global affairs. Hu made a six-point proposal, which was welcomed by Yudhoyono, to "strengthen strategic communication," increase trade and broaden ties in other areas.

China wanted to expand links with Indonesia in oil, gas, mining, electricity, space and renewable energy, Hu said.

The nations should also expand defense cooperation by "staging joint drills, increasing visits [and] jointly combating terrorism and cross-border crime."

Indonesian and Chinese business leaders also reached agreements worth $17.4 billion, Yudhoyono said.

"The cooperation has been agreed upon in 15 memorandums of understanding. The sectors in which cooperation has been established include seaports, roads, alternative energy, the motorcycle industry, mining, construction in strategic areas and steel industry," he said.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua said companies attending the business summit included China Huadian Corp., China National Offshore Oil, China Harbor Engineering and Indonesian state steel maker Krakatau Steel.

Yudhoyono said Indonesia welcomed Chinese companies to invest in the country and assist with infrastructure projects.

Hu said the two nations were on track to Reaching $80 billion in bilateral trade by 2015.

BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono agreed Friday to strenghten consultation and cooperation so to raise the bilateral strategic partnership to higher levels.

The heads of state reached the agreement during their talks held in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing on Friday morning. They agreed to strengthen strategic consultation and expand practical cooperation between the two countries, and also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

This marks the second time the Indonesian president has paid a state visit to China. President Susilo paid his first visit to China in July 2005, several months after President Hu Jintao visited Indonesia and announced the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries.

Hu said that since the establishment of the strategic partnership, bilateral links have seen healthy and rapid growth with fruitful cooperation in various areas.

Hu said China appreciates Indonesia for its adherence to the one-China policy and firmly supports Indonesia in its effort to safeguard national unity and territorial integrity.

During Friday's visit, Susilo said he was deeply impressed by the friendly feelings that the Chinese people hold toward Indonesia. He said Indonesia regards China as a major cooperative partner, and expressed the confidence that the strategic partnership will continue to advance on the existing sound basis.

Hu said China is ready to work with Indonesia to further deepen the strategic partnership in the following six areas:

First, the two countries will strengthen strategic communication and enhance mutual trust as good neighbors.

Second, the two countries will expand trade and economic cooperation to promote common development. China will continue to encourage Chinese companies to participate in the development of the six major economic corridors in Indonesia. China is ready to expand bilateral cooperation in the areas of oil, gas, mining, electricity, clean energy and renewable energy.

Third, the two countries will deepen defense cooperation by gradually expanding the scope of collaboration on defense and security, staging joint drills, increasing visits, jointly combating terrorism and cross-border crimes, and safeguarding the security and peace of their own countries and the region.

Fourth, the two countries will carry out maritime and space cooperation. The two countries should take the signing of the agreement on maritime cooperation as an opportunity to further advance maritime cooperation. They will also work together to make positive progress in bilateral space cooperation.

Fifth, the two countries will expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges by increasing cooperation in the areas of education, media, youth and tourism.

Sixth, the two countries will strengthen cooperation on regional and international issues in order to safeguard their common interests.

Hu said China is glad to see Indonesia play an important role in regional and international affairs.

Hu also said that China is ready to step up cooperation with Indonesia within various multilateral mechanisms, properly address global challenges and hot issues and advance the development of international order toward a just and rational orientation.

Susilo fully agreed with the six propositions that President Hu put forward on further advancing bilateral links in an all-around way. He said Indonesia is willing to maintain close high-level contact and dialogue as well as consultation at all levels with China.

He said Indonesia welcomes Chinese companies to increase investment in the country and participate in major infrastructure projects. Susilo expressed confidence that the two countries will achieve the goal of boosting bilateral trade volume to 80 billion U.S. dollars every year ahead of the 2015 deadline.

Susilo said Indonesia supports the expansion of people-to-people exchanges, especially between the young people of the two countries.

Reiterating Indonesia's stance that relevant countries should address regional issues through consultation and cooperation, Susilo said Indonesia is ready to step up communication and coordination with China within the regional cooperation mechanism so as to promote the peace, stability and prosperity of the region.

After the talks, the two presidents attended the signing ceremony for a number of bilateral cooperation documents, including those on maritime cooperation, anti-drug cooperation, trade and tourism.
