Pepi Fernando, the mastermind behind a two-year group bombing campaign against the president, a church and assorted public figures who were deemed "Allah's enemies," was sentenced on Monday to 18 years in prison for terrorism.

Prosecutors at the West Jakarta District Court alleged that Pepi, a graduate from Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, led a group of 16 people who plotted the attacks from 2010 to 2011. So far, only two of the 16 accused suspects have been sentenced.

The other suspect receiving a sentence, former Global TV cameraman Imam Mochammad Firdaus, was punished on Monday with three years and four months in prison for hiding information about the thwarted plots.

On two separate occasions, the group laid bombs intended to strike President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

In 2010 they hid the first bomb in a thermos flask near a traffic light on a road in Cawang, East Jakarta. They waited nearby with a remote control detonator, but the president never passed and they gave up after four days.

A second attempt in 2011 also failed when the bombers backed out after spotting a police patrol.

Yudhoyono was targeted because he was considered to have refused to uphold Islamic law, prosecutors said.

Immediately after the sentencing, Pepi approached his lawyers, who said his client would use the seven days allowed to consider whether he would appeal the verdict, which was less than the life imprisonment demanded by prosecutors.

Outside the courtroom, Pepi's lawyer Asludin Hatjani said Pepi thought the verdict too harsh.

"A punishment of 18 years is too much for Pepi," Asludin said. "We hoped for a lesser sentence. One reason for this is that Pepi has been cooperative and truthful throughout the proceedings. The judges acknowledged this today."

In addition to plotting against the president, the group planted bombs that were intended to blow up the Center for Science and Technology Research (Puspiptek) in South Tangerang as well as a church in Kranji, Bekasi, on Good Friday.

It also sent bombs disguised as books through the mail. The targets who received the book bombs included Endriarto Anas; Ahmad Dani, a singer; Japto and Ulil Abshar Abdalla, both political and religious commentators; and Gories Mere, a former official in the police's anti-terror squad, Densus 88.

Pepi's group failed to injure their intended targets but killed a garbage collector when a bomb detonated on a bridge. They also caused a police officer to lose part of an arm after he tried to defuse one of the book bombs without waiting for the specially trained and equipped bomb squad.
