Editorial: A Gold Medal for Wasting Money?

Plagued from the beginning with problems, the games village that will host the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang next month is finally nearing completion. Games organizer Inasoc on Sunday promised that the Games would begin on time, although it warned that some last-minute work may still be in progress. It admitted that five venues in the South Sumatra capital are not complete and may not be before the Games begin on Nov. 11. But Rachmat Gobel, Inasoc director general, is upbeat that the unfinished work will not disrupt the Games or hinder the athletes.
We hope that he will be proved correct. The Southeast Asian Games are important to Indonesia's credibility as an emerging power in the region. They provide an ideal opportunity for the country to showcase its accomplishments — and its ability to organize large events. It is therefore crucial that the Games unfold without hitches and that the athletes and officials from participating countries have a positive experience during their stay in Indonesia.
However, there is another cloud looming on the horizon. It is clear that there has been some miscalculation on the provision of accommodation for the 15,900 athletes and officials coming from 11 Southeast Asian countries. Nearly 8,000 are expected to stay in Palembang. The athletes' village in Palembang's Jakabaring Sports City, however, can only accommodate around 2,000 occupants, and there are only 4,500 hotel rooms in the provincial capital. The city could thus be short by 1,500 beds.
One idea is to create floating hotels by converting naval ships into temporary lodgings for the athletes and officials. This is far from ideal, but it could provide the needed temporary solution if it proves logistically possible. It is now too late to launch an inquest into how we have come to such a state but there should be a full inquiry into the mismanagement of the organization of the Games after they are over.
Every effort must be made to ensure the Games are a success and a credit to the country. Trillions of rupiah of taxpayer money have been spent on building the Games village and in promoting the event. We sincerely hope that this money has not been wasted.
