Former Health Minister Accused of Receiving Rp 1.2 Billion in Bribes

Former Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari has been accused of receiving graft money from the procurement of health equipment for the Ministry of Health's crisis response center.

Siti, who served as minister between 2004 and 2009, was originally called in by the KPK as a witness against Ratna Dewi Umar, the ministry's former director of medical services.

Ratna was named a suspect for her role in various alleged mark-ups and other forms of embezzlement linked to the procurement of equipment in 2007, which are believed to have caused at least Rp 6.8 billion in state losses.

This latest information was revealed during the initial trial involving the former head of the Health Ministry's crisis center, Rustam Syarifuddin Pakaya, who had also been named a suspect in the health equipment procurement scandal, at the Anti-Corruption Court on Thursday.

Presiding prosecutor Agus Salim claimed that Rustam allegedly received traveler's checks from Graha Ismaya as a kickback for paving the way for the company to obtain the project. Director of Graha Ismaya, Masrizal Achmad Syarief, gave Rustam traveler's checks issued by Bank Mandiri worth Rp 4.97 billion.

"[Part of] the traveler's checks of Bank Mandiri were given by the defendant [Rustam] to Siti Fadilah Supari and worth Rp 1.2 billion," Agus said.

Siti Fadilah Supari denied that she received the traveler's checks.

"I have never accepted anything from Rustam or from any others," Fadilah told Tempo.co.

She commented that if she was indeed involved in the case, she should have been named as a suspect.

"In this Rustam case, I'm still a witness," she said. "Checks like that would be easy to track."
