24 dead in stampede at Timbuktu's oldest mosque

BAMAKO: Twenty-four people were killed and many more injured in a stampede in Djinguereber mosque on Friday, officials and witnesses said on Friday. Djinguereber is a famed mosque in the northwestern desert city of Timbuktu, Mali, and is one of the city's most recognizable buildings. Thousands of pilgrims visit Timbuktu on the auspicious occasion of the Holy Prophet's (PBUH) birthday. According to sources renovation work was being done on the 14th-century mosque and several passages had been closed restricting the available space for the huge crowd and this resulted in the stampede. Rescue services arrived on the scene fairly quickly and helped the injured, a source said. afp
