Two Sand-Eater Boys in West Sumatra Diagnosed with Malnutrition

Padangpariaman, West Sumatra. Two small boys from Olo village in the West Sumatra town of Padangpariaman have been diagnosed with malnutrition, with X-ray results confirming that they have regularly eaten sand.

"These are severe malnutrition cases; they're really lacking nutrition, protein and energy," Robert Simanjuntak, a pediatrist with Pariaman Hospital, where the boys are being treated, said in Padangpariaman on Tuesday.

"X-ray results show that the kids ate sand every day because they were deprived of food. They've been eating a lot of cooked rice since they started undergoing treatment here," he added.

Robert said the boys, Rizki, 8, and his brother Rio Jaya Saputra, 4, had been diagnosed with Marasmic-kwashiorkor, a malnutrition condition that results from the deficiency of both calories and protein.

"They need between two and three months of medical treatment, including the stabilization, transition and rehabilitation processes," Robert said, adding that the hospital and the Padangpariaman administration would cover all related costs.

Meanwhile, the two kids' mother, Marnis, expressed puzzlement over her childrens' sand eating habits.

"My children are indeed lacking nutrition, as we have no money to buy nutritious food. I don't know why my two kids like eating sand," Marnis said while accompanying the two boys at the hospital.

Her two kids were admitted to hospital after a nurse in a community health center near the village examined their condition, Marnis said.
