Koran Graft Suspect Apologizes, Calls the Case a 'Warning From God'
A lawmaker from the Golkar Party who has been named a suspect in a graft-ridden Koran procurement project at the Religious Affairs Ministry apologized on Monday, and said his case was a warning from God.
"I personally apologize to my friends, family and party leaders who might have been surprised and shocked," Zulkarnaen Djabar said at a press conference on Monday. "Please accept my apology, as I myself am also surprised. As an ordinary human, I could not free myself from weakness, so I apologize."
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has been investigating the Koran corruption scandal at the Religious Affairs Ministry. The project was allocated Rp 35 billion ($3.75 million) in the 2010-11 State Budget.
Zulkarnaen, who is also a member of the House of Representatives' Budget Committee, is accused by the KPK of receiving a kickback for his role in smoothing the approval process at the House during budget talks.
"Apology is very human. There is no superhuman," he said. "Superman is in imaginary world only."
Zulkarnaen added that he viewed his case as a warning from God, and considered his role in the scandal as a sign that he was "too happy" dwelling on earthly matters.
"I need to increase my vertical communication [to God]. This is a warning," he said.
