SBY swears in 16 new ambassadors

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono swore in 16 new Indonesian ambassadors at the State Palace on Monday.

The 16 new envoys will immediately begin their duties in their designated countries after the swearing-in ceremony, which was also attended by Vice President Boediono and Cabinet members.

Among the new ambassadors is senior Kompas journalist August Parengkuan, who will be posted in Rome to serve as Indonesian ambassador to Italy, Malta and Cyprus. August will also serve as the country's representative for several UN organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Program (WFP), the UN Center for Human Settlements (UNCHS) and the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT).

New Indonesian ambassadors:

1. Foster Gultom, formerly Foreign Ministry secretary to the director general of ASEAN cooperation, as ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan and based in Astana.

2. Harimawan Suyitno, previously Indonesian consul general in Guangzhou, China, as ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives and based in Colombo.

3. Trie Edi Mulyani, previously head of the Foreign Ministry's Center for Studies and Development of Policies in the America and Europe regions, as ambassador to Colombia and based in Bogota.

4. Ronny Prasetyo Yuliantoro, previously Foreign Ministry director for Middle East affairs, as ambassador to Tunisia and based in Tunis.

5. Triyono Wibowo, former deputy foreign minister, as Indonesia's permanent representative to the UN, the WTO and other Geneva-based international organizations and based in Geneva.

6. Marcellinus Primanto Hendrasmoro, senior diplomat, as ambassador to Timor Leste and based in Dili.

7. Chilman Arisman, previously Indonesian consul general in Penang, Malaysia, as ambassador to Bahrain and based in Manama.

8. Rachmat Budiman, former Foreign Ministry director for political treaties, as ambassador to Austria and Slovenia, as well as the UN, UNIDO, UNCITRAL, UNOV, CTBTO, IAEA, and OFID. He will be based in Vienna.

9. August Parengkuan, senior journalist at Kompas daily, as ambassador to Italy, Malta and Cyprus, as well as FAO, IFAD, WFP, UNCHS, and UNIDROIT. He will be based in Rome.

10. Maj. Gen. (ret.) Anshory Tadjudin, formerly TNI chief's intelligence assistant, as ambassador to Afghanistan based in Kabul.

11. Marshal (ret.) Herman Prayitno, former Air Force chief of staff, as ambassador to Malaysia based in Kuala Lumpur.

12. Benny Bahanadewa, former consul general in Chicago, the US, as ambassador to Greece based in Athens.

13. John A. Prasetio, businessman and special staffer for Industry Minister, as ambassador to South Korea based in Seoul.

14. Niniek Kun Naryatie, senior diplomat, as ambassador to Ukraine, Armenia and Georgia and based in Kiev.

15. Nadjib Riphat Kesoema, former ambassador to the EU, as ambassador to Australia and Vanuatu and based in Canberra.

16. Wajid Fauzi, former Foreign Ministry secretary to the director general for protocol, as to Yemen and based in Sana'
