[wanita-muslimah] Mladic shares prison with former subordinates, foes

Mladic shares prison with former subordinates, foes Publish Date: Wednesday,1 June, 2011, at 11:42 PM Doha Time

After 16 years on the run, former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic now finds himself in a jail in The Hague, sharing showers and a laundry room with wartime subordinates and erstwhile foes. One of his first encounters, however, is likely to be with his former commander in chief Radovan Karadzic, the wartime president of the Bosnian Serb state, Republika Srpska. "I'm sure they will meet in the coming days", once Mladic comes out of an initial, routine isolation period, Karadzic's lawyer Peter Robinson said, though he could not say exactly where or how.

Relations between the two men had reportedly soured towards the end of the 1992-95 Bosnian war which killed some 10,000 people and for which they both stand accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. In his daily routine at the UN detention unit, cooking, cleaning and watching satellite television while awaiting trial, Mladic may rub shoulders with former right-hand men like Vujadin Popovic, sentenced to life in prison for the Srebrenica massacre. Popovic remains at the detention unit pending an appeal.

Also erstwhile foes like former Croatian General Ante Gotovina, at one time more likely to be confronted on the battlefield, can now be tackled in a board game in one of the prison's common areas, where inmates relax when not in court or preparing for trial. Gotovina has been jailed for 24 years for war crimes against ethnic Serbs at the end of the 1990s conflict in Croatia, but has also lodged an appeal.

"There is a remarkably civil understanding between all of the accused and they tend to get on well together," Richard Harvey, court-appointed standby counsel for Karadzic, said of relations between the inmates. "Where a decade ago they might have been shooting at each other, now they accuse each other of cheating on a point of tennis." Mladic was transferred to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia on Tuesday following his arrest in Serbia after 16 years on the run.

Held in cells of 15sq m, inmates at the detention unit rented from a Dutch prison in the seaside suburb of Scheveningen are freed to roam their floors after the cells are opened in the morning until they are locked again in the early evening. The inmates are not separated according to ethnicity, nationality, religion or class. "I wouldn't say they are warm friendships, more a civil cooperation between people who recognise they are stuck together for a long time," said Harvey.

Inmates are allowed to mingle during an hour put aside for outdoor activity every day, and can make arrangements to see family, friends and lawyers.

Each cell has a bed, book shelves, a desk and cupboard, television, toilet and sink.
"The prison regime is strict, but they (authorities) understand that they are generally dealing with people who used to hold high office in the state or military and are used to being treated with respect," said Harvey, who had been visiting the prison since 2005.
"It is not Club Med, but the facilities are not bad."
