BENGHAZI: An international medical aid group says it has suspended its work in prisons in the Libyan city of Misrata because detainees are being tortured and denied urgent medical care.
Doctors Without Borders says in a statement Thursday that its medical teams increasingly have seen patients who have injuries "caused by torture during interrogation sessions."
The group says that since August its doctors in the city have treated 115 people who had torture-related wounds.
It says that Misrata officials have ignored repeated demands to end the torture and have on at least one occasion denied urgent medical care to a detainee.
Fighters from Misrata played a leading role in the eight-month civil war that toppled longtime ruler Muammar Qaddafi.
Torture was rampant in Libyan prisons under Qaddafi.
