Supreme Court Overturns Housemaid's 2010 Acquittal

Remember Rasminah binti Rawan, the frail housemaid accused by her employer of stealing ox tail meat and small household goods such as plates, shampoo and even a bottle of mouthwash?

It appears that the ordeal of the illiterate widow was not over after a court in Tangerang acquitted her in December 2010.

A panel of judges at the Supreme Court has overturned her acquittal, found her guilty of theft and sentenced her to 140 days in jail, the Supreme Court's Web site showed on Monday.

The court, which does not automatically make its rulings public, came out with the verdict in May 2011, the Web site said.

Rasminah, 56, who had already spent 140 days in police detention before the court ordered her release, told the court at the time of her trial that some of the items she allegedly stole were actually hers and others had been given to her by her employer.

Her lawyer, Hotma Sitompul, lashed out at the verdict on Monday, saying it was only issued to justify the time his client had been detained and to defend the image of the prosecutors who had initially lost the case against her.
