RIYADH: The recent decision of the National Recruitment Committee at the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry to suspend hiring Indonesian domestic help has been welcomed by Indonesian officials.

The Indonesian Labor Federation, which is responsible for recruitment, has decided to set up a special federation to deal with recruitment of their domestic staff to the Kingdom. This fulfills one of the major demands raised by the Saudi side. The federation's decision came following the directive of the committee to recruitment offices in the Kingdom not to receive any work visas for Indonesians as Indonesia has failed to abide by the terms and conditions of a bilateral agreement.

A source at the National Recruitment Committee said the authorities concerned in Indonesia issued orders to open an office for a special federation in West Nusa Tenggara province, where nearly 70 percent of Indonesian maids in Saudi Arabia come from. Lauding the initiative taken by the Indonesian federation, the source asserted that the move would serve the interests of both the countries, Al-Eqtisadiah business daily reported recently. It is estimated that there are about 1.5 million Indonesian workers in the Kingdom. Their annual remittances amount to about SR4 billion.

Meanwhile, a number of Saudi economic experts noted that the suspension of recruitment from Indonesia has adversely affected aviation traffic between the two countries. It is estimated that Saudi Arabia used to recruit about 20,000 Indonesians per month before the recent suspension. This was in addition to the number of Indonesians coming over to the Kingdom on Haj and Umrah visas.

Referring to the provisions of the bilateral agreement between the two countries, informed sources said that they included reducing the recruitment charges from SR7,500 to SR6,000.

In a press statement, the National Recruitment Committee emphasized it is fully committed to abide by the terms and conditions of the bilateral agreements. "But this commitment should not be one-sided," said the statement. "The interests of both sides should be protected. The suspension of dealing with the Indonesian federation shall remain until the latter takes steps to form a separate body to exclusively handle sourcing of Indonesian workers."

The committee also urged the Saudis not to apply for new recruitment visas for Indonesians due to exorbitant charges and lack of qualified workers. At present, Saudi families need to pay between SR7,500 and SR8,000 for recruiting an Indonesian worker. Saad Al-Baddah, president of the committee, earlier criticized the exaggerated reporting in the Indonesian media on the abuse of Indonesian maids by Saudi sponsors.

He noted that high-rpofile incidents that have been reported recently are isolated cases.
