Spacecraft Discovers More Than 1,000 Planets
Four months ago, the Kepler spacecraft sallied forth in search of planets. In its first missive home to NASA, Kepler reported that it has found more 1,000 possible ones orbiting distant suns, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Fifty-four of them are in the sweet spot where temperatures allow for liquid water ... and perhaps life. "It's very likely that life is common in our galaxy," said the chief scientist of the Kepler mission. In total, the Kepler discovered 1,235 exoplanets (planets outside our solar system) after searching 156,000 suns at a distance of 2,000 light years from Earth. One of Kepler's most exciting finds was a unique mini-solar system with five small planets whizzing around a star while a giant planet trundles along farther out. The small planets are of such low mass that their exteriors resemble marshmallows, while the core is more like "hard candy" said a scientist on the team. Unfortunately the "candy" planets cannot sustain life because they're orbiting too close to their sun.
