President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has acknowledged the tensions surrounding religious differences in Indonesia, but says democracy demands that the views of minority groups be respected.
Speaking at the fourth World Peace Forum in Bogor on Sunday, Yudhoyono said that democracy in Indonesia was still maturing, and that the process was made more challenging by the diversity of the country's population. He said that the evolution of the political process in Indonesia was a long and complicated.
"In Indonesia, elections and the change of leadership are conducted regularly, democratically and peacefully," Yudhoyono said at the Presidential Palace. "Law and justice must be upheld to form a good government.
"Indonesia as a pluralistic nation must be able to answer the democracy challenges. Indonesia can talk about the basic principles that can be adopted to create a peaceful democratic life."
The president added that in a multicultural democratic country like Indonesia, it is important for all sectors of society to accept the differences of its people.
"We haven't passed the test of whether we can live in a society [consisting of] different religions," he said.
He added that in Indonesia, the views and aspirations of the majority need to be accepted, but without ignoring the voices of minority groups or people with different identities.
"Everyone must build a culture that solves differences in a peaceful manner without resorting to uncivilized solutions like violence," Yudhoyono said.
He added that in exercising their rights and freedoms, members of the public should avoid insulting, harassing and degrading other people's values and symbols of their identity.
"For the country's sake, let's put the people's interests above groups' interests," the president said
