Worked to death

The deaths of thousands of migrant workers in recent years bring Malaysia's safety standards into question.
Last Modified: 30 Nov 2012 09:09

Thousands of foreign workers have died in Malaysia in recent years from accidents, illnesses and suicide. They work in so-called '3D' conditions - dirty, dangerous and difficult.

Critics say the death rate is a result of slack safety standards, poor housing conditions and weak enforcement of laws to protect them. Last year, more than 1,000 foreign workers died from accidents, illnesses and suicide.

Malaysia is the largest importer of labour in Asia. Migrant workers provide cheap labour in construction, manufacturing and plantation industries. There are more than three million foreign workers, of which nearly a third is undocumented.

Most of the migrant workers come from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Nepal.

Desperate to repay debts from the high recruitment agency fees and under financial pressure from their families back home, migrant workers are vulnerable to exploitation. Many suffer non-payment of wages, abuse, serious injuries and even death.

On this episode, the 101 East team meets those who risk it all to make a living in Malaysia and ask: Is enough being done to keep them safe?

Indonesian Maid Falls to Her Death in Malaysia
Jakarta Globe | November 30, 2012
An Indonesian maid in Malaysia has died after falling from her employer's 9th floor condominium while trying to escape via the balcony.

Antarakl.com reported on Friday that the incident took place on Thursday afternoon in Damansara, Selangor state.

The maid, named Sukini, was from Kalumpang, West Sulawesi. She had apparently long planned to flee her employer, who she claimed would often subject her to psychological abuse.

Yanti, a friend of Sukini, said the maid had several times discreetly dropped her tissues with pleas for help.

"Since two weeks ago, I got three messages written on tissues that she threw every time she passed in front of [my laundry] stall while accompanying her employer to buy nasi lemak [traditional Malaysian rice dish] in the morning," Yanti said.

Sukini complained in the three messages of her difficulties, including that she was not allowed to communicate in any way with her family.

Recently Yanti said she received a fourth and final message, reading: "Sister, please save me. If you can't help me, I will run away through the balcony."

"After reading the fourth message, I reported it to a security guard," Yanti said. "But she had not been rescued by the time we heard that she died."

Petaling Jaya Police chief Asst. Comr. Arjunaidi Mohamed confirmed the maid's death.
