BALI, Indonesia: Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah reaffirmed here yesterday his country's abidance by the principles and goals of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Addressing the ongoing NAM ministerial meeting, held here on the occasion of the NAM's celebration of the 50th anniversary of its creation, Sheikh Mohammad vowed that his country would continue working with the movement in order to coordinate stances on international issues and to meet stupendous challenges facing the international community in terms of world peace and security, development and human rights.

He said the NAM's celebrations come at a time when "we are determined to fulfill the hopes and expectations of our fathers, who are the co-founders of the NAM, by means of consolidating cooperation among the NAM member states." Sheikh Mohammad also reiterated Kuwait's full backing to the continuous review of the NAM's role and activities with a view to boosting its capabilities for meeting the expectations of its member states' peoples, who are yearning for a decent life where they can enjoy justice, equality, security, stability and welfare.

Regarding the current situation in the Arab world, he said the world is monitoring the swift and subsequent developments in Arab countries, which necessitate a pause for thinking about the causes and reflections of such events and then setting out effective initiatives for attaining people's legitimate requests, primarily better economic, social and developmental conditions.

Given the global financial crisis and soaring food prices, Kuwait, through its development fund, has extended loans and grants worth USD 15 billion to many world countries, mainly NAM member states, mainly for bankrolling infrastructure projects there, he reminded. Kuwait has also adopted several initiatives aiming to push economic forward and to improve the living conditions of poor countries; mainly a USD-100-million fund for decent life, the Kuwaiti deputy prime minister and foreign minister boasted.

On Palestine, Sheikh Mohammad said the Palestinian issue is the root cause of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the current state of chaos and instability in the Middle East region is due to failure to find successful solutions to this issue. Now that Israel is still intransigent and the Palestinian people are still suffering, the international community should live up to responsibility by putting the squeeze on Israel to observe relevant international resolutions, he concluded. - KUNA
